Any mention of this day forces me to fight back tears; I cannot imagine the grief of Riley and Reed’s parents and families and friends, and pray continuously for comfort and peace for all of you. The profound shock and sadness and chaos of April 30, 2019, marks a before and after moment in the course of the existence of this university that I love. I am so incredibly grateful that the “after” is marked not by a senseless act of violence, but instead by the opportunity to learn about and forever honor the lives of two wonderful and heroic young men, to celebrate the recovery and successes of the four physically wounded students and all others who endured mental and emotional trauma, and to unite and rise as a community bound to each other by a pledge to heal, persist, support each other, and never forget. #CharlotteStrong
